Super Chlorination

Successful implementation of a super chlorination process in Newcastle to ensure the cut over of new De-Aeration & Weir Pits are pathogen-free.

The Challenge
Eire Constructions having used Shore Hire (Now United Rentals) over the course of the project, needed to perform pH Correction, super chlorination & De chlorination on their 805KL de-aeration, weir storage and pipeline systems at Grahamstown WTP prior to cut over to meet health and safety requirements, ensuring pathogen elimination while adhering to operational constraints, such as fixed cut in dates, day work only & precise dosing requirements.

Our Solution
A carefully planned, multi-stage chlorination and de-chlorination process utilizing our Trident T2 & MB7 assets was developed over the various stages of testing, treating & cut in, with real-time monitoring to maintain effective dosing and ensure that chlorinated water met stringent quality standards before final discharge.

Summary
Flow Rate: 9-10L/s
Treated Volume: 805,000L
Controlled Dosing and Fill Rate: Chlorine dosing maintained at a precise rate of 0.817 L/hr with a target free chlorine residual of 3 mg/L, ensuring adequate contact time for effective disinfection.
Real-time Monitoring: Field testing of chlorine, pH, and turbidity levels was conducted continuously, allowing for adjustments to maintain optimal water quality throughout the process.
De-chlorination Process: Post-chlorination, the water was de-chlorinated using ascorbic acid treatment to safely discharge to the detention basin.
Collaborative Sampling and Testing: Eire engaged NATA-accredited labs for microbiology tests, and AEA performed on-site sampling, ensuring all testing aligned with compliance requirements.
